Getting Started

You must have a Google Tag Manager GTM ID. Click here for more information about Google Tag Manager.

Google Tag Manager presents a data layer for users as they progress through the checkout. These e-commerce events include impressions, addToCart, and purchase events.

The data presented at each step can contain a list of products with the following information:

  • Name - Name of the item
  • ID - A unique item ID containing the event (And parent event, if an event series) information
  • Price - The face value price of the item
  • Brand - The organisation name of the seller
  • Category - The name of the event
  • Metric4 - The presented service fee of the item

Additionally, the purchase event contains the following data attributes:

  • ID - The confirmation number of the order
  • Affiliation - The organisation of the seller account
  • Revenue - The total order cost
  • Tax - The amount of product tax included on the order
  • Shipping - The delivery cost
  • Coupon - The coupon code used, if any

Google Tag Manager is implemented with an allowlist of the following items: google, non-GooglePixels, customPixels, and ts.

Google Tag Manager is usually set up as a container to hold other Google products, such as GA4, AdWords, YouTube Ads, and Floodlight.

Events must be set up within Google Tag Manager for Page Views and Custom Events. Even if GA4 is in the Google Tag Manager container, GA4 events must be set up within Google Tag Manager. Thus, it is recommended that you still list your GA4 G-code on the webpage, even if it is part of the container.
